"Why aren't we cloaked?" Isaac asked. "We need to get in close to the shuttle without drawing attention. If they know we're coming, they could kill Beck before we can rescue her."

"Cloak slows us down," Shoji said.

"By fractions," Kinsey said.

Shoji juiced the thrusters for every ounce of power they had. "Fractions add up." Tin Man fired like a missile at the shuttle, which was docked in center of the upper quadrant of the gate. "Isaac, cut the engines when I say."

"That also doesn't seem like a good idea to do in the middle of a warzone."

The distance between Tin Man and the shuttle shrank quickly. Shoji slipped out of his control harness. When the shuttle was only fifty yards away, Shoji pulled the emergency eject cable. The faceplate shot off and up, dragging behind Tin Man.

"What the hell is happening right now?" Isaac yelled.

Shoji fired a quick burst of the reverse thrusters. He shot out of the cockpit like bullet. "Kill the engines!" Tin Man drastically slowed its approach and came to a near stop behind Shoji as he continued to rocket forward at breakneck speed. At his current velocity, he would turn to soup if he slammed into the hull of the shuttle. Or he would if he didn't have his own personal shield. Shoji activated the shield, crossed his arms, and prayed that Kinsey was as much a genius as he believed her to be.

He crashed through the windshield of the shuttle and fell to the floor. An emergency energy patch closed over the hole before everything inside was sucked out. Shoji stood. The inside of the shuttle was divided into two compartments—the main area, where he was now, and the cockpit. The two pilots were in the cockpit. The other four who had escorted Beck were in the main area. One of them was dead, crushed on the floor like a bug underneath Shoji. The other three were so surprised that they stared at Shoji and did nothing. Shoji rose to his feet and stuck his blade in the first soldier's throat before they shook free of their shock. Shoji was too fast, and the area was too small. He was on the second one before the Vhast could raise his weapon. Shoji stuck him in the chest and took his gun as the Vhast fell. Shoji blasted the third soldier's head into rubble. He walked into the cockpit and did the same to the pilots before they were out of their chairs.

Beck did not move through all of it. When Shoji returned to the main area, he feared that she had been hit during the fight, killed seconds before he was able to rescue her. But when he squatted in front of her and brushed the Vhast blood off her helmet, she threw her arms around him. "I didn't think I would see you again."

"I'm not so easy to get rid of. Our ride is outside." He pulled on her wrist, but she stayed rooted in place.
